A Message from the Senior Executive Board Member

As I write my last column for ICONnection as Senior Member I have to observe that it’s been a good run. Of course, as I write this I’m influenced by the fact that we still don’t know whom the next president of the United State will be! Fortunately, ICON does not have a problem with succession, and the transition from the old Executive Board to the new promises to be an easy one.

We’ve had a good year within the organization. The treasury is flush, a consumer health grant is being administered, a full day CE is being planned for 2001, and the membership is stable.

Change is coming however. A new Executive Board will be announced at the December 8th meeting. A new Executive Secretary has been appointed and will take office in January 2001. Ken Oyer will pass the torch to Mary Helms and Mary is certainly no stranger to the workings of ICON. We don’t even have to teach her the secret handshake.

There is always room for growth and development (ongoing CE needs of members, networking with the Lincoln Health Sciences Library Group, continued development of the resource sharing agreement with South Dakota, etc.). As a small organization we rely on member action to continue moving forward. I encourage each of you to consider volunteering for ICON. As we face the uncertainty of change, new technological wonders, even threats to the survival of libraries, as we know them, it is reassuring to know there is a constant, ICON. ICON is a solid organization that deserves your support. In return you get continuing education opportunities, personal networking possibilities, and professional growth.

Finally, I encourage all of you to attend the December 8th meeting at the Creighton University Health Sciences Library. Following the business meeting Karen Mier will present her views and observations about MCMLA 2000. Following Karen’s talk we will have our annual holiday party.

It’s been a good year. Let’s celebrate our successes in 2000 and kick-off the challenges of the new year. Join me as the next ICON meeting at 1:30 p.m. on December 8th.
