Treasurer’s Report was given by Ken Oyer
Jim Bothmer gave an update on the Consumer Health Grant. The subcontract expires July 2001. The subcommittee is selecting a web provider from two possible vendors, and will present the vendor choice at the next ICON meeting. The subcommittee has also put together a mini-grant application to be sent to public libraries in late August, providing up to $3000 for hardware/software and some print materials for consumer health. Planned exhibits for this subcommittee include: Fremont, NE; Nebraska City; Nebraska Library Association; Midcontinental Medical Library Association. Joy Winkler circulated marketing items showing the official color and web site address for the Consumer Health information. The intent is to have a web site with a living map to carry information seekers to state level resources. Joy also mentioned the McGoogan Library’s consumer health video in production. The video will belong to ICON, who will also market it. The Consumer Health Grant paid for the video production. Jim acknowledged Ronnie Mevorach’s work to create the Access database of raw resource data. Ken Oyer will report at a later date on the progress of the database.

- Road Trip to Sioux Falls - Jim Bothmer
- ABC Breakfasts 2000/01 - Ken Oyer
- Other:
- Donation to Zambia medical library. Joy Winkler spoke to the group about Christine Kernyenko, a medical librarian from Zambia who visited UNMC during Winter 1999/2000. Christine’s library is short library materials and medical journals. Joy moved that a $500 donation from ICON be given to Christine to be used at her discretion for materials and/or conference costs. Rose Schinker seconded. Robin suggested that Christine should submit a request to ICON first. Ken Oyer requested that the group obtain feedback from Christine first on what her needs really are. Mary Helms said that the group should investigate what it can do before deciding on a donation. Ken Oyer suggested withdrawing the motion and let the executive committee work on the project before presenting it to the group again for a motion. Joy withdrew the motion, and Rose withdrew the second.
- CE opportunities. Robin asked if there was a planning committee for CE opportunities in ICON. Jim Bothmer said that the road trip to South Dakota will replace CE for 2000. He requested ideas be sent in by members for 2001 CE opportunities. Robin mentioned a possible topic: Do’s and Don’t’s of Renovation. Angela said that ICON could collaborate with another group and co-sponsor an event. Jim will take the suggestions to the Executive Committee. Mary Helms suggested that a Spring 2001 timeframe be considered. Marie Reidelbach said that it would ease planning and coordination to include local talent. Jim repeated that members should email specific CE topic suggestions to him.
- Road Trip. Jim reminded the group that the South Dakota Road Trip is scheduled for June 29. Members should meet at Creighton at 7:30 am. The trip will first visit Vermillion, then Sioux Falls and return by 7 pm.
- ABC Breakfasts. Ken Oyer gave the list of the ABC Breakfast speakers beginning in October 2000. ICON has purchased 10 tickets to each breakfast again this year. Information is on the ICON web site under ABC Breakfasts.
- Dancing with Change. Jeanne Burke told the group that this videoconference will be downloaded at Creighton (as well as Bellevue) June 16 from 11-12:30. There is no need to RSVP.
- Nominations for MCMLA outstanding awards. Joy Winkler encouraged the group to submit nominations for the MCMLA outstanding awards. Information and deadlines were sent out on the MCMLA discussion list.
- Tri-Chapter Meeting plans. Mary Helms gave an update on the progress for the MCMLA-SCMLA-SMLA meeting plans for the October 2001 Tri-Chapter meeting. More information will be available after the MCMLA meeting September 2000.
Motion to adjourn: Ken Oyer. Mary Helms seconded. Meeting adjourned.
Mini-MLA--Mary Helms, MLA Scholarship recipient, gave her presentation on what activities she experienced while in Vancouver, BC for the MLA conference. She thanked the group for the scholarship, and said that this conference was well-run with great food. This was also the coldest MLA meeting she has attended. There was a record 2400 member attendance, and a record number of exhibitors.
In addition to the meeting agenda she filed with ICON, she said that the chapter sharing roundtables was a great activity to look forward to when planning to attend the MLA 2001 in Orlando. This is the only activity where members get to interact as well as attend. This year’s attendance included 320 members – expect more next year. Local MLA members were able to help present/facilitate at this function, including Rose Schinker, Mary Helms, Sharon Lezotte, and Teri Hartman.
Other local information presented at the conference included the Blair Witch spoof done called the “McGoogan Stacks Project”, shown at the poster session. Wayne Peay, University of Utah, gave a digital video presentation.
She announced that a new section had been created: Leadership and Management Section. This section will focus on leadership and managing skills.
Some statistics she shared with the group: by the year 2025, 75% of current MLA membership will be eligible for retirement. This means that there needs to be a push to get younger members interested in joining.
She attended the ejournal symposium. Rose Schinker mentioned that she had benchmarking handouts available.
Mary then offered to the group the freebies she picked up at the conference exhibitors’ booths.
Respectfully submitted by Teri Hartman, in the abscence of Karen Mier.
