On June 29, six ICON members toured three of the four University of South Dakota libraries. Lommen Health Sciences Library shares the same building as I.D. Weeks Library in Vermillion. We were impressed with the number of computers available to the students. These libraries, under the direction of David Hulkonen, are bringing some of their policies into uniformity and are expanding the space available for instructing students in the use of computer software and library services. A Special Collections Department has an extensive collection of Northern Great Plains materials with particular emphasis on Native Americans. The decor is warm and inviting, with a very handy staff person caring for hundreds of plants in the building.

The second leg of our tour took us to Wegner Health Science Information Center in Sioux Falls, about an hour from the Vermillion campus. There we met Kay Wagner, the director of the facility.

Wegner is a facility with twelve partners; just think of negotiating twelve contracts each year to determine your budget! It is located on the Sioux Valley Hospital & University Medical Center campus, with after-hours service available through a card-controlled door. They offer many of their services to the community as well. Currently, the basement is unfinished but houses journal backfiles and provides group study areas. Full use of this space is still being planned.

The ICON members that joined the tour received a warm welcome from everyone they met at the facilities. We want to thank our South Dakota colleagues for their hospitality. We hope to be able to return the favor some day.
