Consumer Health Grant
The video, "The librarian is in: facing modern consumer health issues in the public library," was distributed to staff of the institutional members present. The videos will be mailed to ICON institutional members not represented at today's meeting and to public libraries in the area. Jim Bothmer and Mary Helms indicated that Creighton and UNMC will ship the remaining "The Librarian is in" videos to the ICON institutions which haven't received it yet. Kathy Tooker offered to distribute copies to the public libraries in the Eastern Library System. Additional copies can be ordered for $15.00. Jim will submit the video for consideration for the John Cotton Dana Award.
Three mini-grants were awarded to the public libraries in Scribner, Valley, and Springfield. The grant funds will be used for print and electronic resources dealing with consumer health issues. Jim has prepared an article to be published in the Eastern Library System newsletter. Joy Winkler also thanked the volunteers who helped man the booth at the NLA conference.
Committee Reports
- Honors and Awards Committee - Rose Schinker announced that the committee will be accepting applications for the MLA Scholarship. MLA 2001 will be at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
- Resource Committee - Karen Mier reported that there are now links to free full text journals in the list of "library links" on ICON's home page. She also noted that there are 457 libraries in the FreeShare group; these libraries agree to free reciprocal borrowing. She indicated that NLM does not plan to offer consumer access to SERHOLD in the near future. The next focus for NLM is USMARC output and accepting USMARC and OCLCMARC input into SERHOLD. NLM has provided many useful reports in SERHOLD, including a list of holdings not updated within one year, holdings outside of publication date, and title changes. NLM also provides SERHOLD union lists for any group you belong to, whether it be ICON, FreeShare, or other consortia. The current ICON list available in SERHOLD is dated October 17, 2000. The report can be pulled up in a delimited format as well as the more traditional-looking format. Karen will be working with Ronnie Mevorach to make the union list available from ICON's home page and in a print format.
- Ad Hoc Continuing Education Committee - Kate Rose distributed in both email and paper format a list of possible topics for a full-day CE program to be sponsored by ICON. Members were asked to vote for their preferred topics. After the results have been compiled, the Committee will work on scheduling a speaker and advertising the program. The program will be free to ICON members.
- Nominating Committee - Jim Bothmer announced that Chris Armstrong agreed to run for freshman member of the Executive Board. Jim reviewed the responsibilities of the Executive Board as outlined in the bylaws. There being no further nominations from the floor, Chris was elected by a unanimous vote. Jim then passed the torch to Rose Schinker. The members present thanked Jim for his years of service, and Jim was presented with a thank you gift.
Donation to the University of Zambia
Ken Oyer made a motion that ICON make a contribution to the University of Zambia in the name of Christine Kanyengo; Joy Winkler seconded. Jim Bothmer amended the motion to stipulate that the contribution be used for the purchase of books based on Christine's wish list. The amendment was accepted by Ken and Joy. Jim further amended the motion to indicate an amount up to $500. This amendment was also accepted. The motion, with amendments, was approved. Creighton University will order the items from Christine's list and have them shipped to the University of Zambia.
Announcements
Jeanne Burke reminded everyone that the UCITA satellite teleconference, funded by ICON, will be Wednesday, December 13, from 1-4 p.m. at Creighton Health Sciences Library. UCITA is the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act.
Ken Oyer announced that tickets for the remaining two ABC Breakfasts are still available to ICON members.
Iowa Western has had some staff changes. Pam Collins now works at Council Bluffs Public Library. Ellen Van Waart is new to Iowa Western.
The next ICON meeting was tentatively set for Friday, March 23, at 1:30, at the LaVista Public Library and Metropolitan Community College facility.
Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. It was followed by a presentation by Karen Mier, recipient of ICON's MCMLA 2000 scholarship. Karen reviewed the conference, which was held in Denver in September. She provided a handout summarizing E. Diane Johnson's presentation on electronic journals and discussed several of the programs and speakers at the conference. After the presentation, members joined in a holiday celebration which included good food and door prizes for everyone.
