CONSUMER HEALTH
Information Sheet

Consumer health information (CHI) is information on health and medical topics provided in response to requests from the general public, including patients and their families. In addition to information on the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of disease, CHI encompasses information on health promotion, preventive medicine, the determinants of health and accessing the health care system. These guidelines are adapted from the Medical Library Association Criteria for Consumer Health Library Services. We want you to know about several access points to health information.

ICON Web Site

HealthHQ provides access to consumer information on self-help groups, participating public libraries, and regional and national consumer health websites. The geographic focus is all of Nebraska and Pottawattamie County in Iowa.

HealthHQ was established using funding from the National Library of Medicine under contract NO1-LM-6-3524 with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Additional current funding is provided by the Nebraska Library Commission and ICON. HealthHQ is designed and maintained by ICON librarians in Omaha, Nebraska.

Methodist Health System Web Sites

The Methodist Health System website will link you to a regional network of health care providers, educators and support services that share a commitment to providing high quality, affordable health care to the people of Nebraska and southwestern Iowa.

Pathways to consumer health information can be found through the John Moritz Library website. The Library is a department of Nebraska Methodist College. When you begin with this page, click on the topic “Consumer Health”. You will be linked to the following access points:

Some of the topic areas included in the Resources section are nutrition, senior health, men’s health, women’s health, support groups, pediatrics, and parenting, to name a few.

The Richard Young Center site gives you access to many information sheets on a wide variety of mental health topics.
