Call to Order and Introductions

Minutes
Minutes from the June 28, 2002 meeting were approved as published on ICON’s home page.
Executive Secretary Report (Mary)
Mary handed out 2003 Membership renewal forms and presented the Financial Report. Expenses for healthHQ maintenance are rapidly depleting our funds. It is vital for us to get a new contract for healthHQ in order to continue healthHQ.
Other items:
A signup sheet for the booth at the NLA/NEMA Fall Conference was passed around.
Teri Hartman asked if the brochure would be updated before the Conference and Mary said probably not.
Tom Gensichen asked if we should be spending money for scholarships and collection development grants at this time with our funding the way it is?
Discussion will take place for these items later down in the agenda.
Communications Coordinator Report (Erin)
The new ICONnection is up on website. All address updates have been made. Erin is leaving this position at the end of the year. Anyone interested in the position should contact a member of the Executive Committee. There are a couple of people at UNMC interested. The job description will be posted in an e-mail sent to members.
Committee Reports
- Bylaws No report
- Membership No report
- Resource Committee:No report
healthHQ Steering Committee Report (Jim)
Jim was not available. Mary talked about the new contract proposal that she is writing. ICON is asking for about $32,000 in funding to cover maintenance of the healthHQ website, clipping service, training, publicity and exhibiting. Discussion followed. Angie Arner provided an update on database work for healthHQ. Angie passed out some clippings from Nebraska newspapers that carried stories about healthHQ. We now subscribe to HONcode principles.
Old Business
- Scholarships for 2002 - Karen asked to combine discussion about CE and Collection Development. We have the fall round of CE money available, plus a bit left over from spring round. CD funds up to $500 are available. Karen asked for discussion. Sara Martin spoke in favor of offering CD money. Karen read the criteria for the CD money as developed by the Executive Committee:
- An applicant must be an institutional member in good standing with ICON.
- Materials requested may be print or electronic and may include database
subscriptions. However, any necessary ongoing support must be addressed in
the application.
- Items may be designed for the consumer or the professional health care
worker.
- Itemized lists of books need not be included.
- Awarding of grant money is optional, based on the merit of the
application.
Deadline for applications is October 15, 2002, with the award being
announced by November 1. Funds should be spent by December 31, 2002.
Mary Helms discussed the ICON budget, what we take in and what we spend. Discussion followed. It was decided that we will offer the Fall CE scholarship and the CD grant.
- Continuing Education Ad-Hoc Committee (Jeanne) - The committee met to discuss possible upcoming CE offerings. On Oct. 31, Jeanne and Teri Hartman will offer a PDA workshop. Time and place have yet to be determined. More information will follow. Other CE offerings are being discussed for 2003. The membership, as well as other area groups, will be polled to see what types of CEs they would like to have offered.
- Collection Development grant - Approved, see discussion above.
- Ariel - Tom is working on a guide that members can take to their IT department regarding what hardware and software are needed, what technical support would be needed from their department, etc. This will hopefully answer questions and calm concerns regarding HIPAA regulations. The resources committee continues to look for grant money to allow more member libraries to get Ariel access. No specific grant is being offered/sought at this time.
- Lincoln Health Sciences Library Group - Judy Healy, Karen Mier and Teri Hartman attended the September meeting in Lincoln. They told the group about ICON and healthHQ and discussed union lists and collaborating on CEs. Some of their member libraries are already a part of the union list, and those that aren’t do not use Docline. As many of their members are from one-person libraries, they would have a difficult time getting away for an ICON meeting in Omaha.
No new business
Adjournment
Next meetings
The next meeting will be held at UNMC, McGoogan Library of Medicine, on Friday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. After the meeting, we will have our Christmas party.
