Third Quarter Meeting
September 5, 2003, 2:00 p.m.
La Vista Public Library, Room 138
Present: Shawn Ammon, Angela Arner, Erin Bauer, Judi Bergjord, Robin Bernstein, Siobhan Blackwell, Jim Bothmer, Jeanne M Burke, Tom Gensichen, Teresa Hartman, Judith Healy, Mary Helms, Marty Magee, Karen Mier, Marie Reidelbach, Rose Schinker, Kathy Tooker, Nancy Woelfl, Mary Wolcott-Breci. Visitors: Carol Maguire (Alegent Health – Midlands), Sue Raymond (Nebraska Center for Bioterrorism), Gina Toman (Nebraska Methodist College).
Call to order/Introductions Meeting began at 2:10 PM. Everyone introduced her/himself.
Approval of June minutes June 13, 2003 minutes were approved as published on ICONnection with the following corrections: (1) In Header, change “First Quarter Meeting” to “Second Quarter Meeting.” (2) In “Committee Reports – Membership,” change “Current members are listed on ICONnection.” to “listed on the ICON web site” & (3) omit underlined words “ICON libraries that charge non-ICON libraries for interlibrary loan need to update their routing tables….” (4) In section “healthHQ Committee Report,” omit underlined words “UNMC is linked with the Nebraska Library Commission through CHIRS so it would be reasonable….” & (5) In section beginning “The Librarian Is In,” change “Mayo Clinic received a grant to train librarians in public health and wants to use healthHQ as part….” to “wants to use video as part….” & (6) change “Teresa Hartman abstained from all voting related to healthHQ” to “related to video.” (7) In “Old Business – Scholarships for Fall 2003,” change “posted on ICONnection” to “posted on ICON web site.” (8) In “MCMLA for Omaha in 2007,” change “ICON Executive Board needs to appoint a chair….” to “ICON Executive Board will appoint a chair” & then insert in a year or two in order to begin….”
Executive Secretary’s Report (Mary Helms) Mary distributed ICON Financial Report 9/5/03. Report doesn’t reflect 18 video sales, because videos are in production process.
Communication Coordinator Report No report.
Bylaws No report.
Membership M Helms will bring membership forms to
December ICON meeting. Checks or cash are acceptable.

Continuing Education (Jeanne Burke & Teri Hartman)
· Handouts: (1) “Suggested
Educational Activities for ICON 2003-2004” listed six teleconferences, along
with possible wrap around sessions. Creighton Health Sciences Library &
Bellevue University will host teleconferences with phones available for
audience to call in questions. Wrap around locations would be flexible.
Information will be posted on ICON web site. Nebraska Library Commission will
be contacted about posting, as way to notify public librarians. Lincoln Health
Sciences Library Group & NN/LM MidContinental Region will also be invited. (2)
“ICON Education Questionnaire” polled vendor, hardware and/or applications
demonstrations, and intent to attend Technology Play Day on Jan 23, 2004. (3)
“Volunteer application” for ICON members to demo at Technology Play Day.
· J Burke’s sister is still working
on date for Winter 2004 presentation on marketing for libraries. Speakers from
local area could enhance program by holding round-table discussion.
healthHQ Committee Report (Jim Bothmer, Marie Reidelbach, Nancy Woelfl) · Primary understanding of healthHQ was eventual transfer of sponsorship to another entity. M Helms (moved) K Mier (seconded) that UNMC take over financial obligations and sponsorship of healthHQ. Motion passed. Formal letter regarding transfer will go to ICON Senior Board Member. It will include an option for ICON to resume responsibility for healthHQ if UNMC ever relinquishes sponsorship. Transition actions: UNMC Foundation has been petitioned for endowment to support healthHQ. UNMC has taken on clipping service & will host healthHQ on its server. Domain name & financial obligations will be transferred. S Ammon will be involved with web transfer & M Helms with finances. · Application fee for “Medicine on the Net” award is $35.00 T Hartman & N Woelfl will submit application for “Librarian Is In.”
ARIEL Grant contract proposal update (K Mier) We
are ranked in 2nd tier with 163 points. Range is 150 – 200 for
“Excellent” category. We were asked to submit W-9 form. These factors make
grant award look positive.
MCMLA in Sioux Falls, October 15-18. T Hartman
has room in van. Scholarship is still available if someone wants to apply.
NLA in Omaha, October 29-31. Conference website has links to ICON & healthHQ. ICON/healthHQ booth needs volunteer help during conference & for setup on afternoon Oct 29 & for take down after 1 PM October 31. Exhibitors’ reception is evening October 30. There are enough bookmarks & brochures to distribute at booth.
ICON holdings list Metro has been dropped from list. T Hartman issued an open invitation to learn how to revise union list on website.
RML News combined with RML Update
Next meeting: December 12, 2003, 2 p.m, at Creighton Health Sciences Library, in Thune Seminar Room.
Christmas party & election of new executive board member Election will take place at December meeting. ICON will pay for party refreshments.
Other
College of Saint Mary is looking for a cataloger.
Rose Schinker offered free books to those present, as the La Vista Public Library received 3000 donated items this summer.
Program: RML Update
T Hartman gave brief overview of new consumer-focused databases that have to do with genetic disorders, common household products, & environmental toxins in specific areas of cities. She handed out a fact sheet with database URLs & bookmarks for DOCLINE, Toxnet, & PubMed. She reported that SERHOLD & OCLC are working more closely together & thanked ICON members for maintaining accurate SERHOLD records.
Siobhan Blackwell promoted two upcoming conferences. “People of Color Celebrating Healthier Communities” is theme of 10th Annual Minority Health Conference sponsored by Nebraska Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (September 30 – October 1) in Kearney NE. Nebraska Multicultural Expo (October 4 & 5) will be at Qwest Center. Siobhan asked for volunteers to help her cover hours at exhibit booth & will give volunteers free passes to the Expo. She gave a demonstration of several ways to retrieve census information & handed out a fact sheet “Statistics UGH” with information regarding these.
